Do you believe in the evolution of human consciousness?

Posted on Jul 18th, 2008 by ItsWill : Atrayu & Bastian ItsWill
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 18, 2008:

Most definitely.  Or rather, I believe in the evolution of Mind within Life.

Initially, life clung to a geological bedrock, perhaps a sulferus underground geyser.  Eventually, the seaweed gives rise to plant life.  Wind spreds it across the geosphere.  Plants break down a layer into a sort of "skin," soil joining the biosphere with it's geological nutrients.  Complex eco-systems of rain forests evolve, insects and flowers "mating" and sharing chemical attunement.  A bit more flexibility with the amphibians, neuro-signals travel from "eye to tounge" without mental interfearence.  Reptilian mind adds a bit more, in the ability to control muscles throughout the body, giving Life a captivating predator-prey dance to experience...
And life hits a wall.  Not much more to do besides hunt and die, that primal ecstacy of larger muscles and sharper teeth.  Towards the end, reptilian mind begins to protect their young, so life wants to experience "family."  Brimstone and Fire; restart.
Mammilian organisms form and hide in the shadows, noctournal.  "Hearing" as a primary or equal sensory input creates spacial-relational concepts within the collective Mind, and eventually mammals creep from the night into a new dawn.
We also see complexity growing through grasslands as opposed to Rainforests.  Grasslands support a stronger base on which Life can build...more insects, deeper top-soil, etc.  Mammals grow big, tactical, and self-regulating, nurturing young and the complexities of family in both predation and prey.  Again, Life enjoys the hunt and death to its fullest.  Meanwhile, back in the forest, primates have created a social structure of a much higher complexity than predatory packs or hunted herds.  Especially interesting is proto-sapiens, which combine the primate needs of social organization with the predatorial ability to divide everything into self vs. other, danger vs. food.

Human history, itself, is a story of Awareness being able to be analysed and shared by a greater number of points-of-view with a greater amount of ease.  This trend is now growing exponentially, monthly, within a system of global commerse and communication.  Consiousness does not exist without our ability to SHARE it, transending individual Awareness.  This growth has been directional and gradual, increasing through empathy and non-zero-sum solutions.

Of course it's evolving.  Keep in Mind, it is not individual.  Awareness has not evolved.  Shared awareness, Consiousness, most definitely has and will continue to do so...first within Reality, and as the reality of the Virtual grows, it will within the Viritual.

(I had a much more detailed answer to this, regarding human-specific evolution...and then I decide to click my mouse, forwarding to a new page in a browser and erasing that which was not saved.  I suppose, however, this is long-winded enough.  Brevity is not a strength I posess!)
